POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Sunday School Teacher (3-6 yr. olds) CLASSISIFCATION: Non-Exempt

HOURS: 2.5-5 hours/week + auxiliary hours RATE OF PAY: $15.00/hour

as required (training, meetings, etc.)

REPORTS TO: Sunday School Coordinator

Purpose of the position:

To nurture the children of St. Luke’s, through teaching and example, in their understanding of God’s love, their familiarity with Bible stories, and their sense of belonging to a welcoming and accepting community of faith; and to maintain a safe, clean, and well-functioning classroom environment.

Overview of the position:

The Sunday School Teacher shall prepare lesson plans and lead classroom story time and activities that explore concepts of God’s love per the curriculum provided and in accordance with the ministry of St. Luke’s. This includes working cooperatively with the Christian Education Committee, the Sunday School Coordinator, and all classroom volunteers. The Sunday School Teacher assumes leadership responsibilities to ensure volunteers are assisting in accordance with curriculum goals and all child safety guidelines, including the proper administering of first aid and positive behavioral correction/re-direction.

Responsibilities:

  • Begin at 8:30am before Worship Service on Sunday mornings, currently working alongside the nursery teacher in a combined classroom, with the potential to eventually move into a separate 3-6 year old classroom.
  • Implement church-provided curriculum
  • Foster a loving, positive learning environment for spiritual growth, curiosity, reflection and creativity.
  • Familiarize oneself with the story in advance. Prepare lessons and gather/prepare/organize all materials needed for each week’s lessons, art activities and games
  • Sing songs/play music/dance
  • Communicate in advance with the Sunday School Coordinator any materials needed for the lesson plans that are not already in-house and available.
  • Optional extra hours providing childcare in the nursery for babies and children of choir members and staff during the school year (beginning of September- end of May) from 6:45pm-8:45pm on Thursday nights during choir practice. This may include diapering and potty-break responsibilities. Currently these hours are regularly filled by another staff member, with this position serving as a potential substitute when necessary.
  • Prepare sanctuary activity materials for older children staying in the service.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy classroom.
  • Regularly wipe down/clean all surfaces, toys and equipment with the disinfectant solution provided.
  • Regularly inspect all toys and equipment for safety hazards (broken or missing pieces, non-functioning elements, etc.). Take every measure to remove all safety hazards from the classroom and communicate needs for replacements/repairs to the Sunday School Coordinator.
  • Tidy the classroom after each use, making sure all toys, books, games, art supplies and equipment are returned to their rightful place before turning out the lights and closing up.
  • Communicate with the Sunday School Coordinator any cleaning and/or first aid supplies that are low and need replacing, as well as any larger cleaning or maintenance task that need immediate attention (i.e. burnt-out bulbs, large spill on carpet, leaking plumbing, soiled bedding, etc.).
  • Ensure that each child in attendance has a completed Emergency Contact/Medical Information form in the provided binder and that the binder remains in the classroom at all times. Be familiar with the medical information provided for each child. Give the parents of each new child in attendance a form to fill out and return; then, add newly completed forms to the records. Alert the Sunday School Coordinator of each new child in attendance.
  • Attend all mandatory safety training and re/certification workshops, as instructed.
  • Report to the Sunday School Coordinator weekly and more frequently as needed
  • Observe and support the emotional and physical wellbeing of each child; and report any concerns to the Sunday School Coordinator.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience working with babies and children. Teaching experience preferred.
  • Diaper-changing willingness and know-how

  • First Aid/CPR certification or the willingness to get certified within 2 months of employment.
  • Must pass a complete background check/reference check as well as a boundary training/child safety online course (provided by employer)
  • Must supply two professional references with current contact information for each

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.00 per hour

All staff and people attending church are required to wear a mask. Classroom cleaning protocol and hand washing enforced.
