The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service overseeing the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — 84,000 acres of national parkland spanning the San Francisco Bay Area, including Muir Woods, Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, and Alcatraz Island. Department Description:

Our interpretive centers welcome visitors from all over the world. They provide friendly and helpful visitor services and sell merchandise to commemorate our iconic parks.

Position Overview:

The Parks Conservancy seeks a professional, reliable, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable person to fill the position of On-Call, Part-time Sales Associate at the Warming Hut Park Store. This is a unique opportunity to work for a nonprofit organization supporting the Golden Gate National Parks. The Sales Associate will provide historical, trail, and park information about Crissy Field, the Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, and Fort Point to visitors from all over the world. This will help encourage visitors to form a lasting connection to our magnificent National Parklands. Sales Associates also help visitors find and purchase interpretive and general merchandise (i.e., books, apparel, posters, magnets, etc.) as a member of our team to help the Conservancy meet its revenue goals.

All candidates must be willing to work an 8-hour shift, including weekends and holidays, between the hours of 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM, depending on the shift, season, and/or business needs.

Reports To: Retail Manager

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide friendly, welcoming, and attentive service to all visitors.
  • Complete all retail transactions quickly and accurately.
  • Provide information to visitors about the history and developments at Crissy Field.
  • Keep informed about Golden Gate National Parks, Presidio, and other partner sites.
  • Working within a cohesive team, assist with restocking the sales floor, and maintaining stockroom organization.
  • Clean and maintain commercial café appliances (i.e., refrigerators, coffee makers, hot chocolate machines, ice machine, sink, etc.) including replenishment of beverages on a regular basis.
  • Communicate quickly, accurately, and respectfully to appropriate parties when visitor and employee safety, park resources, facilities, and assets are at risk.
  • Maintain positive and respectful relationships with all partners including the National Park Service, Presidio Trust, and Parks Conservancy colleagues.

Interpretive Sales

  • Greet, welcome, and engage visitors to create an excellent sales and service-oriented experience for visitors.
  • Sell store merchandise to help achieve sales goals.
  • Share product knowledge of publications and park products to ensure visitors are informed about offerings.
  • Sell NPS park passes to visitors.
  • Complete all retail transactions quickly and accurately, observing required money-handling procedures as presented by your supervisors.
  • Assist with restocking sales floor, keeping displays well-stocked, clean, and organized.
  • Assist with counting, tagging, and back-stocking new merchandise.
  • Communication of issues, concerns, and ideas about inventory or displays to help improve program is encouraged.

Visitor Information and Orientation

  • Provide interpretive information to visitors about the history, nature, and events about Crissy Field, Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, and San Franciso.
  • Provide current knowledge about trails and other park information to ensure visitors have an informed and safe visit.
  • Provide general information about the GGNRA park sites.
  • Provide information to visitors about the scope of the Parks Conservancy’s work, programs, volunteer opportunities, and other ways for engagement.
  • Provide directions to assist visitors travelling to other park sites.
  • Promote and sell memberships, explaining benefits and value of joining the Parks Conservancy.
  • Provide visitors with basic understanding of the Conservancy’s partnerships with the NPS and Presidio Trust, as requested or needed.

Safety and Security

  • Assist visitors and staff during emergencies to ensure safety is always the top priority.
  • Communicate quickly and accurately to appropriate parties regarding visitor and employee safety, park resources, facilities, and assets.
  • Create and maintain productive, positive, and respectful relationships with park partners and colleagues including the National Park Service, Presidio Trust, and Parks Conservancy.

Training

  • Point of Sales operation (POS) and cash handling.
  • Complete all required training to provide the best service for visitors including safety, park sites and information, and POS.
  • Participate in ongoing training on inventory, merchandising, and Conservancy programs and protocols.
  • Food handling certification

  • Able to operate POS system and handle payment methods accurately and efficiently (cash, credit cards, etc.).
  • Able to operate and maintain commercial café equipment and replenish supplies.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma
  • Some retail sales and customer experience preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environments:

  • Standing most of the day, but also sitting, squatting, kneeling, or walking, depending on a wide range of duties.
  • Working on the sales floor, stockroom, and outdoors in the park.
  • Working around commercial beverage equipment dispensing hot beverages and water.
  • Walking around the site and outside environment in response to visitors’ concerns.
  • Learning how to navigate to and around the site, trails, overlooks, local neighborhood, other parks, and transportation options.
  • Lifting, carrying, or positioning objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Wearing a uniform and adhering to professional appearance standards.

Pay Rate: $20/hour + based on relevant work experience; Benefits include Employee Assistance Program, Commuter Program, and employee discounts, etc.
