Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita has multiple part-time (PTS) positions available in the City’s Recreation and Community Services Division. Under the leadership of the Community Services Coordinator, these positions will work directly with the one of the City’s After-School programs or assist with the Neighborhood Outreach programming. These positions may work up to 20 hours per week and are based on the needs of the program; Monday – Friday from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m.

The After-School program is based out of the City’s Community Centers (Newhall and Canyon Country) and provides youth and teens ages 5 to 17 with homework assistance, organized games, and arts and crafts.

The Neighborhood Outreach program is based out of various local neighborhood sites and provides homework assistance for youth ages 5 – 17, health and resource fairs, and events for the community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Work directly with the Community Services Coordinator, Program Specialist, and other Recreation Leaders to implement afterschool programs, activities for youth and teens, and neighborhood services
  • Assist youth and teens in the classroom with homework; reading, and projects
  • Oversee and lead youth and teens in activities such as sports, arts and crafts, games, etc. and maintain staff/youth safety ratio
  • Prepare materials and activities for programs and events
  • Assist with various special events including Smiley Buck Store and rewards program
  • Assist with community resource and health fairs and neighborhood outreach in various neighborhoods
  • Assists in organization, set-up, and clean-up of facility
  • Organize, prioritize, and follow-up on assignments
  • Greet patrons and participants and answer inquiries regarding programs
  • Effectively addresses issues and concerns with youth and teens as they arise
  • Maintain various forms, logs, and reports
  • Attend meetings and training sessions
  • Follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
  • Perform first aid and respond to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents
  • Adhere to Los Angeles Department of Public Health guidelines set forth
  • Other duties, as directed by Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, Program Specialist and/or Recreation Leader II/III
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma, GED, or valid work permit (obtained from school)
  • Six-months of paid or volunteer experience in leading and planning activities for youth and teens in a recreation, education, child care program, after-school program, camps, or other relatable setting
  • Completion of college courses is highly desirable
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish highly desirable
  • Common Core State Standards knowledge and experience is highly desirable
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by December 31, 2022, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid. A Red Cross CPR/AED/FA course will be offered by the City and staff may elect to participate in this training (unpaid) at a cost of $21 for the certification.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner, for self and others
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including inclement weather
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is required occasionally

Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

In compliance with the California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
