Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The goal of the City of Santa Clarita Aquatics program is to provide safe and enjoyable aquatics experiences that are responsive to the needs of the community. This is done through various programs offered throughout the City’s eight pools. The focus of the lifeguard positions will be to effectively provide aquatic programs while maintaining a safe environment. The maximum hours worked in a week will be dependent on the season. These positions are limited to 999 hours worked in a fiscal year.

Returning Staff (If you have worked as a lifeguard for the City before):

1. Apply no later than Monday, December 20, 2021, by 5:00 p.m. The application must be completed prior to swim testing.

2. The dates and times for swim testing are below and are provided only so you can make sure you are available.

3. Complete the mandatory swim test (consisting of a 400-yard swim with a time under 7.5 minutes) on one of the following days:

Lifeguard testing will take place at the Aquatic Center located at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway. If you have any questions, please contact Aquatic Center staff at (661) 250-3740.

Upon successful completion of the swim test and formal interview, qualifying applicants will be invited to the Lifeguard Candidate Academy. The Lifeguard Candidate Academy is a 60-hour lifeguard training school, which will take place from the end of March through early April. Participation in the Lifeguard Candidate Academy is not a guarantee of employment.

Lifeguard Candidate - $14.56/hour

Applicants who have completed the swim test and formal interview and are attending the Lifeguard Candidate Academy will be considered “Lifeguard Candidates.”

Education/Experience for Lifeguard Candidate:

  • Must be at least 16 years old by June 4, 2022
  • Completion of some high school required
  • High school diploma, GED, or valid work permit (obtained from school) required
  • Six months of experience working with youth is highly desirable

Candidates who successfully complete all aspects of the Lifeguard Academy may be offered employment as a Lifeguard I at the end of the Lifeguard Candidate Academy. Participation in the Lifeguard Candidate Academy is not a guarantee of employment as a Lifeguard I.

Lifeguard I - $16.35 - $16.84/hour

Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting with coaching youth team programs, as assigned
  • Assisting with programs and special events, as assigned
  • Attending all trainings
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work environment
  • Inspecting the pool facility and equipment on routine basis
  • Using City registration software to assist in registering aquatic program participants
  • Maintaining records of assigned programs
  • Operating cash register to accept payments for drop-in programs
  • Organizing first aid equipment
  • Performing pool chemical readings as needed and recording on paper log
  • Practicing preventative lifeguarding
  • Providing excellent customer service in person and by phone
  • Recording attendance
  • Reporting issues to management staff
  • Teaching American Red Cross (A.R.C.) swimming lessons, if certified
  • Understanding and enforcing pool rules and City policies
  • Ensuring safety onsite and is aware of emergency procedures

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Certification in A.R.C. Lifeguarding, First Aid, Adult and Pediatric CPR, AED, and Title 22: First Aid for First Responders will be provided

Education/Experience:

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Completion of some high school required
  • High school diploma, GED, or valid work permit (obtained from school) required
  • Completion of some college courses is highly desirable
  • Must successfully pass the City lifeguard swim test and the City Lifeguard Candidate Academy
  • Must pass lifeguard swim test annually
  • Six months of experience working with youth is highly desirable

Knowledge and Abilities for BOTH Lifeguard Candidate/Lifeguard I:

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekdays, weekends, nights, and holidays, as needed
  • Ability to lift, drag, push, and/or carry at least 25 lbs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both orally and in writing

Lifeguard II - $17.44 - $17.96/hour

In addition to Lifeguard I duties, knowledge, abilities, and certification requirements, the Lifeguard II position may include, but is not limited to:

  • Aerating the pool, as needed
  • Assisting with maintaining balanced water chemistry
  • Operating automatic and manual vacuum
  • Operating pool mechanical system, as needed
  • Pressure washing assigned areas
  • Teaching swimming lessons according to A.R.C. standards

Education/Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school diploma, GED, or valid work permit (obtained from school) required
  • Completion of some college courses is highly desirable
  • One year of experience working with youth is highly desirable

Certificate and Licenses:

  • Certified as an A.R.C. Water Safety Instructor

Lifeguard III - $19.62 – 20.21/hour

In addition to Lifeguard I and II duties, knowledge, abilities, and certification requirements, the Lifeguard III position may include, but is not limited to:

  • Assessing participant abilities to ensure proper program placement
  • Coaching youth team programs, as assigned
  • Dispensing medication to participants, as needed
  • Operating City vehicle, as needed
  • Traveling to competitions/events regionally
  • Familiarity with team and/or meet management computer software, which is utilized for swim meets

Education/Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school diploma, GED, or valid work permit (obtained from school) required
  • Completion of some college courses is highly desirable
  • One year of experience working with youth and at least one season of experience coaching youth in aquatic sports required

Final candidates for the position of Lifeguard Candidate and Lifeguard I/II/III will require a negative TB test result within the last two years to be cleared to work. This clearance must be completed prior to the first day of work on March 21, 2022 (For New Applicants) and June 1, 2022 (For Returning Staff). It is important to note that current CDC guidelines do not allow for a TB test to be given within 28 days of receiving the first or second dose of a Covid-19 vaccine or vaccine booster. Final candidates that are unable to provide a negative TB test result and clear the background process by March 21, 2022 (for Lifeguard Candidates) and June 1, 2022 (for Lifeguard Rehires) may not be eligible to work the Aquatics summer program.

All offers of employment with the City of Santa Clarita are made contingent upon receipt of proof of legal right to work in the United States and successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment physical which may include a drug screen and Physical Abilities Test, negative TB test on file, and Department of Justice fingerprinting. Criminal offender information will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. The City uses the E-Verify program to electronically confirm work authorization of newly hired employees.

In compliance with the California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
